Kostas Pavilidis

Traditionally Greek Romanies played instrumental music and rarely sang. However, Kostas Pavilidis has been singing since he was a child. His Romani identity has always been a prominent and integral part of his music and career. Sar Penen is his latest album (2003)

Sar Penen (What do they say?) is a song from the title in the Romani (Gypsy) language about their minority experience. In the following refrain there is love and humanity:

What do they see in we Roma when we die?
What do they say about we poor people?
Oh my girl, you have taken my thinking from me
I love her so dearly I would die for her.
